Health Services

Behavioral Health

Cherokee Nation Behavioral Health offers a variety of services and programs. These include mental health and substance abuse services, community prevention, research, and evaluation.  Outpatient services include individual and group therapy, grief and trauma counseling, substance abuse counseling, relapse prevention, parenting skills for disorders of childhood, psychiatry, psychological testing, and crisis intervention.

All Cherokee Nation Health Centers provide Behavior Health Services.  Availability varies by location. Child and Adolescent services in Tahlequah are provided at the HERO project.

Hero Project

The HERO Project is the Cherokee Nation’s Children’s Behavioral Health unit. Our goal is to support our children, youth, families, and communities. We provide counseling and support services for families with children from newborn to 21 years of age who are citizens of a federally recognized tribe.

Family Care Management

  • Help find community resources (such as child care, social services, parenting classes, etc.).
  • Collaborate with families to help set and meet their goals.
  • Provide psychoeducation classes for parenting support
  • Advocate for families involved in systems (including schools, etc.)

Support for Parents and Caregivers

Triple P is one of the best parenting programs in the world! The HERO Project is able to offer several different levels of Triple P tailored to your family’s needs. The HERO Project also offers group parenting called HERO Builders. The HERO Project, we believe our children are our heroes, and it’s our job to help build them up. HERO Builders meets once a week for 6 weeks, each session lasts 90 minutes.

Community Support

Child Wellness Action Teams work to make big changes for children and families in their communities. If you want to learn more, find ways to get involved, and make an impact in your community call The HERO Project! Child Wellness Action Teams are available in Adair, Cherokee, Sequoyah, and Wagoner Counties.
