To be considered for selection into the Cherokee Nation Family Medicine Residency Program, applicants must meet the following requirements:

  • • Be a U.S. citizen or a non-citizen/foreign national with permanent resident visa; no visa sponsorship is available by Cherokee Nation
  • • Be currently enrolled as a 4th year medical student at, or have previously graduated from, an osteopathic medical school accredited by the Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation (COCA) or an accredited US-LCME Medical School
  • • Must have passed parts 1 and 2 (CE and PE if applicable) of the COMLEX exam or USMLE equivalent - transcript showing successful completion of part 2 must be submitted no later than January 31 of the application cycle
  • • Must submit their application through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS); our ACGME ID # is 1203900670


The following items are required for employment as a resident at Cherokee Nation Health Services and must be successfully passed by the time of the residency start date:

  • • Criminal background check
  • • Urine drug screen


In addition, Cherokee Nation Human Resources will investigate and verify the following information as part of the employment process:

  • • Social Security number
  • • Prior education
  • • Prior places of residence
  • • Employment history, including interviews with previous supervisors
  • • Personal reference checks 


Non-Osteopathic Candidates

Our program has Osteopathic Recognition from ACGME; all residents in the program will have osteopathic designation and receive the same training. Applicants who are not currently enrolled in, or have previously graduated from, a COCA accredited medical school must complete 60 hours of Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine training available through Oklahoma State University College of Osteopathic Medicine and must have one letter of recommendation from a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine. No other form of prerequisite OMM training will be allowed for substitution in place of that offered through OSUCOM. Please contact the residency program for more information regarding this.
