When I was in undergrad, I was able to do all of my shadowing through Cherokee Nation, and in medical school I completed my IHS externship here. "One of my top priorities while looking for a family medicine program was being able to learn medicine from faculty and upper classmen who were approachable and who wanted to teach without any reservation. It was also important for me to learn about the health issues particular to the community I look forward to serving with my husband. The Cherokee Nation Family Medicine Program not only checked off those criteria but did one better for me with the comprehensive diabetes management program they have in place. I truly believe the multidisciplinary approach in addressing this epidemic is the way to have sustainable favorable outcomes, and I hope to help implement this model and partner with communities around the world, especially the northeast Indian region."
